I worked for more than 15 years as a reporter and editor at daily newspapers in Tennessee, Mississippi, Ohio, and Nevada. I taught at the University of Nevada, Reno, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill before coming to Salt Lake City.
I aim to help people pursue their goals in a variety of fields inside and outside mass communication. My teaching combines practical skills with broad concepts such as civic engagement and personal responsibility.
Teaching areas: Media ethics, news reporting and writing, editing, environmental reporting, business reporting, journalism history, and introduction to mass media.
My research focuses on historical and contemporary issues in journalism ethics and the history of environmental journalism.
Service activities have included chairing the University Publications Council, advising the campus chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, and serving on the board of the Utah Headliners (professional) chapter of SPJ. I also judge the Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl, sponsored by the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics.
