I was born in Salt Lake City, and except for periods when I was in college, doing post-graduate work or in the armed forces, I've lived my entire life in Utah. The environment is inspiring and has provided me with venues for my exploration of visual communication.
Before I began teaching, I spent several years working in the media as a photographer, editor, designer and freelance writer. I still like to keep my hands dirty, so I've followed the path of creative scholarship in my academic career. I'm especially interested in the integration of the visual and verbal, and have pursued that grail in my photographic documentaries and exhibits.
Currently, I am the Program Coordinator of the Documentary Studies initiative, an interdisciplinary program composed of faculty across the campus

Research Statement
My work is primarily creative scholarship. I produce still photographic documentaries with written text that explore the relationships between people and environment. I'm interested in visual communication and visual literacy and how theory in those areas can be turned into practice. I'm also intrigued by how strategies integrating the visual and verbal in a documentary can create meta-messages.
