>> Curriculum Vitae

Born and raised in New Mexico, I find great solace in deserts, bright blue skies, and slow paces. The University of Washington provided an excellent environment in which I could learn the art of disciplinary research and make life long friends. I left there in 1987, PhD in hand, for some time in the midwest, Urbana, Illinois to be specific. I came home to the west and have happily made Utah my home since 1992.

I began my career curious about how classroom communication patterns, like the teacher's use of particular kinds of humor, influenced students' experiences in those classrooms. I then moved to a series of questions about how teachers' communication experiences characterized and influenced their development of role related behaviors and dispositions. At this time I am turning my attention to questions about how communication pedagogy intersects with issues of social justice.

Favorite Books:
This is a long and dynamic list. This summer I read (and loved) Ivan Doig's "The Whistling Season." Right now I am enjoying "Water for Elephants." I'll read just about anything that Barbara Kingsolver writes.
