Carolyn Bliss was born and grew up in Iowa, but came to the University of Utah for her undergraduate studies and first graduate degree. After working for several years as a technical writer for the School of Medicine, she earned another M.A. and her Ph.D. in English at Cornell, then taught at Radford University in Virginia. She returned to the University of Utah in 1987, first in its Liberal Education Program, then in the LEAP Program since its beginning in 1994, and as LEAP Program Director since 2005. She also team teaches an Honors course. She is married to a former high school science teacher and has two grown sons.
Research Statement
Dr. Bliss's research interests are in general and liberal education, undergraduate learning communities, the role of the humanities in medical and pre-medical education, and modern and postmodern Anglophone literatures, particularly the work of Australian writers.
