One of the nation's foremost historians of early America and a recognized pioneer in the field of women's history, Laurel, is a professor of history at Harvard University. Her 1990 book, A Midwifes Tale: The Life of Martha Ballard Based on Her Diary, 1785 - 1812, garnered many honors including the 1991 Pulitzer Prize for History, the Berkshire Conference of Women Historians Book Prize, and the prestigious Bancroft Prize in American History.
