As home to one of the largest and oldest Pacific Island communities in the U.S., Salt Lake City provides an ideal location for the study and discussion of the relationship between Pacific Worlds and the American West. Over the course of 2007-08, the American West Center will sponsor a series of events exploring this relationship, culminating in a conference at the University of Utah February 8-9, 2008.
The conference will also serve as a catalyst for the creation of a Digital Pacific Archive here at UU between 2008 and 2010. Our vision for this archive is for it to become a resource for college and secondary educators - and Pacific Island high school and college students - to make Pacific stories much more central in their teaching, learning, and research. This is very much a bottom-up, community driven project and we expect it to continue to grow in future years.
