About SPJ
The Society of Professional Journalists is the nation’s most broad-based journalism organization, dedicated to encouraging independent journalism and supporting high ethical standards. Founded in 1909 as Sigma Delta Chi, SPJ promotes the free flow of information vital to a well-informed citizenry through the daily work of nearly 10,000 members; works to inspire and educate current and future journalists through professional development; and protects First Amendment guarantees of freedom of speech and press through advocacy efforts.
University of Utah Chapter
SPJ’s more than 250 chapters are its backbone. The local chapter is a conduit for SPJ members to learn about events in the local journalism community as well as topics such as Freedom of Information and First Amendment rights. The U chapter works to provide journalism students with opportunities and connections not available in the classroom. Discussions and panels have focused on current issues affecting the industry, as well as practical matters such writing cover letters and resumes and locating jobs and internships. We’ve had several prominent professional journalists come to campus, including KSL 5 TV anchor/reporter Carole Mikita, KUED producer Ken Verdoia and New York Times Reporter Rachel Swarns.
