Gathering Information: Access and Meetings

From Pember, Chapter 9.

Our goal for this chapter is to learn the important procedures and rights for gathering information from official sources.
With regard to the federal government, one of the most important elements is the "Freedom of Information Act," which permits access to many official records and documents. Pember offers a detailed discussion of the FOIA.
To view the Justice Department's guide to the FOIA you can go to:
http://www.usdoj.gov/oip/foi-act.htm"

If you are interested in searching for actual documents of the federal government, you might try the "Global Information Locator Service/ Government Information Locator Service" ("GILS") at:
http://info.er.usgs.gov/gils/index.html

This week we will also examine some of the access laws here in Utah.
An important tool is Utah's "Govenment Access and Management Act" ("GRAMA").
To learn the procedures you must follow to make a GRAMA information request go to:
http://www.reporters.net/nfoic/web/resource/utah/steps.htm

For instructions on how to write a GRAMA request letter, go to:
http://www.reporters.net/nfoic/web/resource/utah/letter.txt

To view the Government Records Access and Management Act itself, go to:
http://www.archives.state.us/recmanag/grama95.htm

The Utah Code also contains provisions regarding access to meetings at various levels of government. To view those provisions go to:
http://www.le.state.ut.us/~code/TITLE52/52_04.htm
