About Us
Interdisciplinary studies bring together multiple disciplines to pursue new
knowledge and to increase our understanding of a complex world.
_______________________
Interdisciplinary research often emerges when faculty and students begin to look at complex issues from a wide range of approaches. At the University of Utah, such research has recently been directed at culture, medicine and disease, technology, and ethics - resulting in enhanced quality of teaching and research, and furthering the University's mission to create better global citizens.
The Office For Interdisciplinary Studies at the University of Utah has been created to support faculty in innovative collaboration with peers in other disciplines. This support includes collecting data regarding faculty research interests, helping to connect faculty from diverse colleges and departments, aiding faculty in funding of interdisciplinary research, and providing seed grant monies for interdisciplinary research and teaching.
Student Advising
Although student advising resources are not yet available through the Office for Interdisciplinary Studies, graduate students interested in exploring interdisciplinary degrees are encouraged to visit with their home college advisors to discuss possibilities of cross-departmental collaboration. Some programs at the University are very flexible and interdisciplinary course work can be integrated into a unique program. However, others have very specific and inflexible requirements - so we encourage you to make these connections as early as possible.
Undergraduate students interested in interdisciplinary courses of study may contact the office for Bachelor's of University Studies Program (BUS). This program is designed for students to create their own major, and may offer some options for an interdisciplinary approach. To learn more about the Bachelor's of University Studies Program, visit their website: : http://www.ugs.utah.edu/bus or contact Ed Barbanell:
