People always ask why Russian? And I always pause and wish I could point to some long felt yearning for things Slavic. The truth is that I did read Anna Karenina at 14 and love it, but the selection of Russian as a language to study at university, well, that was a complete fluke. I needed something at 2pm and the Italian class I went to was full of Italians..., many of them. Russian had nine students, I was the tenth. And our books were Soviet, hence extremely inexpensive. Of course, I did fall in love and the rest is history, but a well-thought out plan? 'fraid not.
