Teaching Assistantships | The Department of Linguistics encourages graduate students to apply for the Department's teaching assistantships. There are three kinds of teaching assistantships. First, there are ESL teaching assistantships. ESL TAs must either be native speakers of English or have native-like proficiency in English. Graduate students receiving these assistantships will be assigned to teach ESL credit courses at the 1000 level. There are also Linguistics teaching assistantships. Graduate students receiving these awards work with the professors for LING 1200 and LING 3200. There may also be a non-teaching assistantship. This person will gain experience in administration and research. Assistantships provide a tuition waiver of 50% to 100% based on the pay for the classes taught or work assigned. The remaining tuition paid by the students is always calculated at in-state rates, regardless of the student's residency. Students also receive a stipend. The stipend varies depending on the classes taught and whether the graduate student is an M.A. or Ph.D. student. ESL teaching assistants taught two or three classes in the academic year. Teaching three classes qualifies students for a 100% tuition waiver. In addition, teaching assistants are given office space within the Department of Linguistics. Before applying, it is important to note that there is a required week-long orientation and writing seminar for all new ESL teaching assistants the week before classes begin in August. Specific dates will be announced when they become available. Students who are awarded assistantships must come to the orientation all day from 8AM to 5PM. Linguistics teaching assistants are required to attend the first day of department TA orientation as well as the campus wide TA orientation. Please submit application to Kate Lythgoe at LNCO 2300. If you have additional questions, please feel free to contact Kate Lythgoe at kate.lythgoe@linguistics.utah.edu or Shantel de Arraiz at shantel.dearraiz@linguistics.utah.edu. All graduate students are eligible to apply for scholarships. Normally, students awarded teaching assistantships are not considered for department scholarships. Students may apply for both but may not accept both. University of Utah financial aid and scholarship information is available at www.sa.utah.edu/finance and department scholarship information is on the Department of Linguistics website. College of Humanities scholarship information is available at www.hum.utah.edu.

Wick R. Miller Endowed Scholarship | The Wick R. Miller Endowed Scholarship was established in honor of Wick R. Whenever possible, Wick R. Miller Endowed Scholars will be selected from applicants with an expressed interest in studies related to the indigenous peoples of the Americas, a demonstrated desire to preserve, cultivate, and advance any indigenous language or culture of the Americas. Preference will be given to applicants with an indigenous American ethnic heritage. Please note these requirements and procedures: 1. Wick R. Miller Endowed Scholars are required to be matriculated, full-time students at the University of Utah. Each undergraduate or graduate scholarship will be awarded for one year with the possibility of renewal for a second year for a two-year maximum term, as long as the student remains in good standing as determined by his/her academic department and remains in the program for which the scholarship was awarded. Should the student not remain in good standing in the program, the scholarship will be withdrawn at the end of the term for which the scholarship was awarded. Students who have held an undergraduate Wick R. Miller Endowed Scholarship are eligible to apply for the scholarship as a graduate student but will receive no special preference. The applicant must complete a new application as described above. In case a student is a Wick R. Miller Scholarship is not awarded based on financial need, a completed copy of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) may also be included. This is, however, not necessary for a complete application. 5. All applicants are required to request that the following items be sent directly to the Wick R. Miller Endowed Scholarship Committee at the address below. a) Three (3) letters of recommendation, preferably from faculty who can comment on your academic ability and performance. These letters should indicate the length and nature of your association with the individual writing each letter. b) Official Transcripts: * Incoming freshmen applying for the undergraduate scholarship should request official transcripts of high school work: * Continuing undergraduate and all graduate students should request official transcripts of ALL college university work.
