How to Fulfill the B.A. Language Requirement

Minimal or no previous exposure to a foreign language:
Complete the 4th semester level (2020) of any foreign language with either a C-/ CR or better.
If you have any past experience with Spanish, French, or German (classes in, or use of the language within the last 5 years) you MUST take the Language Placement Test to determine which 1000-2000 level class is appropriate. Call 581-7561 for more information about Placement Tests.
Extensive experience with a language other than English
Pass 3060 with a “C-” or better
3060 is for students who have spent a year and a half or more in a native-speaking country or area (church service, Peace Corps, for example) or native speakers (must be a domestic student).
Passing with a “B-” or better allows the student the opportunity to purchase the 16 lower division credit hours.
For approval of upper division courses other than 3060 consult with Lang & Lit Advisor.
Or
Pass the language proficiency test (MLA or FLAT) and purchase the 16 lower division credits
The MLA (Modern Language Assesment Test) is given at the U of U Testing center. The Testing center offers the MLA test for French, German, Italian, Russian and Spanish. Contact the testing center for test times. For languages other than those offered through the MLA test students may take the FLATS (Foreign Language Achievement Testing Service) at BYU. English as a second language (ESL)
Complete ESL 1050 and 1060 with a grade of C-/CR or better
Contact Linguistics, 801-581-8047, for more information); this will automatically fulfill the requirement.
Or
Complete WRTG 2010 with a grade of C-/CR or better.
When the grade is posted, the student must bring a copy of his/her DARS showing the WRTG 2010 grade, a student ID, and proof of citizen status (green card, passport, or transcript proving your education outside the U.S., for example) to the Academic Coordinator in LNCO 1400, Virginia Ellinwood at v.ellinwood@utah.edu if you have further questions.
