NEW Required Courses for German Majors and Minors | All students declaring a German Major or Minor Starting Fall 2009 Semester must take GERM 3550:Intro to German Studies and GERM 3560: Intro to German-Speaking Cultures.

These two courses are required of all German majors and minors who declare in Fall 2009 or after.

GERM 3550: INTRO GERMAN STUDIES. This class offers a basic introduction to the field of German Studies. Students will learn and practice key skills of the discipline (close literary and filmic analysis, critical writing, the use of scholarly terminology in German) and gain exposure to central concerns, developments, and debates in the field. Regularly offered in fall semester.

GERM 3560: INTRO TO GERMAN-SPEAKING CULTURES. This class continues the skill development of Germ 3550 but with a focus on the diversities of the German-speaking cultures of Germany, Austria, and Switzerland and their relationship to Europe. Students will be introduced to the tools of Cultural Studies and explore broad issues, such as national identity, linguistic variations, immigration and emigration, the European Union, and minority cultures. Course taught in German and regularly offered in the spring semester.
