LAS in the News: Local Spanish Language News Coverage of the Dolowitz Lecture
"Mientras algunos estados del continente americano, como Argentina, reconocen las uniones homosexuales, hay algunos otros que lo combaten, lo que "pone en menoscabo los derechos humanos de una parte de la población".

Así reflexionó en la University of Utah, el investigador Mario Pecheny, de la Universidad de Buenos Aires, quien fungió como el orador principal de la conferencia anual sobre derechos humanos "Anne and Sandy Dolowitz", que en esta ocasión se focalizó en los derechos sexuales y humanos en América Latina."

CHANGE THE WAY YOU SEE THE WORLD

In collaboration with the Global Film Initiative, Film Front presents two Latin American Films

FAT, BALD, SHORT MAN (Gordo, Calvo Y Bajito)

Director: Carlos Osuna
Colombia   |   2011   |   91 minutes
Spanish, with subtitles in English
April 16 @ 3:15 pm in ART 271

FILM INFORMATION

Synopsis Lonesome, middle-aged virgin Antonio Farfán is picked on and ridiculed as a matter of course, whether by coworkers or his bullying mooch of a brother (who only calls when he needs money). Clavo Poster-Internal Photo BankAn employee of a notary’s office, his status improves a bit when his new boss—and strangely affable doppelganger—takes an interest in him. But Farfán’s deep-seated shyness and insecurity are only partly assuaged. And when he joins a self-improvement group, he slowly confirms what the undulating lines of this sly, involving rotoscope story suggest: everything is in motion, and change is inevitable. The question becomes what use one makes of it.

About the Director Carlos Osuna was born in Bogotá, Colombia in 1980. He received a Masters in Visual Arts from Javeriana University and shortly after graduation was selected to participate in the Berlinale Talent Campus in 2004 for his short film, Analogue Loop. He was awarded a grant in 2009 from the Francisco Javier Fund for Social Projects for his documentary Giving Life to Life and in 2002, his short video, Watch TV, won the Pre-Columbian Gold Circle award from the Bogotá Film Festival. Fat, Bald, Short Man is his first feature film.

Synopsis Under the cloud of a military dictatorship, a young mother and her daughter flee Buenos Aires for the seclusion of a ramshackle cottage along the windy dunes of an Argentine beach. El Premio-Home Page PhotoAs her mother listens for news from the radio with sad stoicism, restlessly curious seven-year-old Cecilia joins a nearby school overseen by a kindly teacher. A childhood idyll, however, soon becomes contaminated by the general political crisis, as the teacher recruits the class for a patriotic essay contest sponsored by the army—the very people that may have already disappeared Cecilia’s father—in this superbly acted and engrossingly atmospheric drama about innocence in illicit times.
