Program Descriptionlas4-Main Content Image

The Latin American Studies Minor provides students with a multi-disciplinary framework for studying the history, society, and culture of Latin America, a major world region that includes Mexico, Central and South America and the Caribbean. The program provides a coherent forum for examining the intersection of issues of politics, economic development, ethnicity, gender, religion and cultural expression. The Latin American Studies Minor is designed to enrich students' academic experience with cross-cultural and interdisciplinary study while fulfilling Minor, Major and University requirements.

las7-Main Content ImageThe Latin American Studies Minor offers students the opportunity to deepen their understanding of this important region and will strengthen the ability of students to interact with Latinas/os both at home and abroad, whether as citizens, in private enterprise or government work. Students who complete the Minor will better make the kind of cross-cultural comparisons that foster a deeper understanding of the issues that face our society. A Minor in Latin American Studies will also prove attractive to employers who function in an increasingly global economy. The importance of Latin America to the United States economy, especially the US Southwest, has increased substantially in recent years. Students who can demonstrate a background in Latin America promise to be more competitive in the job market.
