A central focus on Brazilian language and culture differentiates our Latin American Studies program from programs found at the majority of public universities in the United States, where the predominant focus is more commonly Mexico or Central America.
Initially, the pressing demand for Brazilian Studies and Portuguese at the University of Utah came in part from a large student population that has served full-time missions in Brazil for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. These students have been completely immersed in Brazilian culture and maintain an enthusiasm for continued engagement. Because of their near-fluency in Portuguese and their cultural competency, they demand a sophisticated scholarly framework of instruction through which they can continue to learn about Brazil. The LDS Church’s strong ties to Brazil have also resulted in a large local population who are either from Brazil or who claim Brazilian heritage. In fact, more than 30,000 people in the State of Utah speak Portuguese
A much wider and more diverse group of students have now expressed interest in Brazil because of its emerging role on the international community, and because of the career opportunities tied to working with the ninth largest economy in the world.
