An Interdisciplinary Venture
The Peace and Conflict Studies minor is part of a dynamic and broad-ranging collaborative effort at the University of Utah. The minor is housed in the College of Humanities, as part of the broader Peace and Conflict Studies program, while also being part of the Barbara L. and Norman C. Tanner Center for Nonviolent Human Rights Advocacy in the College of Social and Behavioral Science. Ted Wilson, a former Salt Lake City mayor and a past director of the Hinckley Institute of Politics, was the founding director of the Center in 2006. George Cheney is the current director.
This initiative draws upon the support of other colleges as well, including Social Work, Fine Arts, Science, and Law. The number of disciplines represented in the minor and in the other activities surrounding it is growing each year. Our programs thus embody a cooperative spirit while bringing together many different approaches to the study of conflict resolution, peace studies, and human rights advocacy.
