My graduate advisees are expected to participate in the Kaffeeklatsch. The procedure is as follows. Prior to each session, a student circulates a draft of a paper or a thesis chapter. (On the current schedule, the paper must be circulated to the members of the group on the previous Thursday, and I have to have a hardcopy left in my box. If the material is not circulated on time, the meeting will be cancelled.) A second student prepares comments, which he or she will read to the group to kick off the session. We will discuss the draft for an hour and a half.
