1.  This is midterm covers material after Russell through the end of the semester, though you may reference previous material as appropriate.

2.  Bring a blue book.

3.  Approximately 1/3 of the test will be short answer.  The rest of your time will be spent answering two essay questions, one from each group below.

 

General study questions:

1.  What is a Turing machine?

2.  Be prepared to distinguish the mind body thesis from functionalism.

3.  How does the worry about multiple realizability lead one to functionalism?

4.  What is the Turing Test?

5.  Familiarize yourself with Carroll's theory of emotion.

6.  What is a monster, on Carroll's view?

7.  How, in Rawls view, does Utilitarianism fail?

8.  What is a 'night watchman' state?

 

These are your essay questions.  You will be given a choice of two from each group, and you will have to write on one from each group.

 

Group I. 

1.   Do the replicants in Blade Runner have minds?  Explain your answer.

2.  Characterize Carroll's theory of emotion, and consider one objection to the theory.  How might Carroll answer such an objection?

3. Characterize Carroll's theory of horror.  Consider one movie that one might be tempted to classify as a horror movie, and explain why it does not count as such a movie on Carroll's view.

 

Group II.

4.  In Brigham City, the Sheriff leads an investigation that invades the privacy of individual members of the community.  Was he justified?  

5.  Rawls has a particular objection against utilitarian approaches to justice.  Explain that objection, and apply it to Brigham City, Hero, or both.

6.  Compare Nozick's "night watchman" state to that of Brigham City.  In which would you prefer to live, and why?
