Reading Club

Stars, Bars, Slashes, and Dots

Brief Overview. This reading group will survey classical and contemporary readings in the philosophy of logic. We will begin with Colin McGinn's new book, Logical Properties (Clarendon 2000). Other readings will be lifted from Dale Jacquette's Philosophy of Logic: An Anthology (Blackwell 2002). Prospective discussants are welcome to purchase a copy of the books through amazon.com or bn.com. Those discussants not interested in purchasing either book will be relieved to know that the readings are available in the milk crate in the department office.

Meeting times. The format of this reading group is different than the typical reading group. The reading group will meet face-to-face every other Wednesday from 2:00 pm - whenever in Room 336 (the Philosophy Department Seminar Room). During the week when the group does not meet face-to-face, discussants are encouraged to participate in an online listserv discussion (outlined below).

Listserv. A listserv email discussion group will be set up with yahoogroups.com. The name of the group is "dangercat." All email postings should be sent to dangercat@yahoogroups.com. Discussants are encouraged to post their thoughts about a particular argument occurring in the reading or contributing their own argument about the topic under discussion. Members are also encouraged to post as often as they like. The listserv is unmoderated, so members of the listserv should abide appropriate listserv etiquette. Philosophical death matches and nanny-nanny-poo-poo arguments are unwelcome. Those engaging in such activity will be unconditionally booted from the listserv.

The Schedule of Readings. The schedule of readings is below. It is only tentative, and it may change without any warning. Prospective discussants are encouraged to make suggestions for changes in the schedule and check it often for current readings.
