Please read the Graduate School's Graduate Handbook and the Graduate School Policy on Tuition Benefit Support.

Departmental Teaching Assistantships

  • Purpose: (1) To provide financial support for a limited number of graduate students who satisfy the Department's criteria for potential excellence in philosophy; (2) To provide these students with a teaching apprenticeship under the guidance of professional teachers of philosophy; and (3) to provide faculty members with assistance in large introductory-level courses. The term of a teaching assistantship is one regular academic year (Autumn, Winter, and Spring Semesters), unless a shorter period is specified at the time of the award.

  • Who May Apply: Matriculated graduate students and graduate school applicants.
  • New Applications: A complete application must be submitted to the Department of Philosophy on or before March 1. The application must include:

    1. University "Application for Financial Assistance."
    2. Department "Application for Financial Aid."
    3. Transcripts of all university or college work.
    4. Three letters of recommendation.

Students who switch from the Master's to the Ph.D. program after one year without completing the Master's degree will not increase the number of awards for which they are eligible. Please refer to the Tuition Benefit Support Policy (6) Restrictions (on page 35) regarding University policy on the number of years Master's and/or Doctoral students are eligible to receive the tuition benefit
  • Conditions: To satisfy the conditions of his/her award, a teaching assistant must (a) demonstrate satisfactory and expeditious progress toward a graduate degree, and (b) perform his/her assigned teaching and related duties conscientiously and well.
  • Demonstration of satisfactory and expeditious progress toward a postgraduate degree requires that a Teaching Assistant:

    (i) Take and complete at least nine hours of graduate level work during each term of the award. University regulations also require that Teaching Assistants not take more than nine hours during each term of employment.

(ii) Maintain a high level of quality in all graduate work. While an occasional grade of "Incomplete" in a course will not, by itself, be regarded as a failure to comply with this condition, an inordinate number of unremoved "Incompletes"--normally two or more--will. Students must also maintain a minimum graduate GPA of 3.00.

(iii) Pass the Graduate Study Qualifying Examination (GSQE) taken during the first year of study as a matriculated graduate student. (The intent of this examination is to assess the student's background and ability to undertake graduate study in philosophy.)

(iv) Comply with the Department and Graduate School requirement for the formation of a Supervisory Committee during the second quarter / semester of graduate study, and meet with the Supervisory Committee Chair (or in the first two terms, the Chair of the Graduate Committee) for program approval.

    (v) Receive Supervisory Committee approval of a written (3-5 page) thesis proposal no later than the fourth quarter/ third semester of graduate study for Master's students, and no later than the eighth quarter/ sixth semester of graduate study for Ph.D. students.

(vi) Complete the following degree requirements within the stated allotments of time: for those seeking the Master's degree, all degree requirements within two years of admission; for those seeking the Ph.D. degree, take at least one comprehensive examination by the fourth term of graduate study, satisfy two comprehensive areas within two years, and complete all required course work, residency, language, and comprehensive requirements within three years. For purposes of this timetable, Ph.D. students who have spent one or more terms in a Master's program will be treated as though beginning their second year of graduate study upon admission to the Ph.D. program.

  • Good and conscientious performance of assigned teaching and related duties requires that a Teaching Assistant:
    1. Perform conscientiously and competently in the classroom.
    2. Attend course lectures regularly.
    3. Allow sufficient time for the performance of these duties; in particular, Teaching Assistants may not take more than nine hours in any one term, and may not accept outside employment without the special permission of the Chair of the Graduate Committee.
    4. Perform course-related duties as closely as possible in accordance with the direction of the faculty member in charge of the course.
    5. Abide, both in and out of the classroom, by the standards of behavior set forth in the University Code of Faculty Responsibility.
  • A Teaching Assistant who violates the conditions of his/her award as outlined above, is subject to termination of the award in accordance with Departmental and University procedures for dismissal.
  • Notification: Letters of appointment will be mailed by the Department no later than April 15.
