The Steffensen Cannon Scholarship Fund was
established in honor of Ellen Christina Steffensen Cannon, a graduate
of the University of Utah who exemplified the pursuit of excellence.
Steffensen Cannon scholars shall have demonstrated
strength of character, intellectual and academic achievement or the potential
for such achievement, leadership, and other qualities evidencing a desire
to pursue excellence and extraordinary achievement.
Specifically:
- The scholarships are for
study at the University of Utah.
- Graduate and undergraduate
students, including incoming freshmen, are eligible.
- Applicants are restricted
to student in the College of Humanities, the Graduate School
of Education, student in other disciplines (particularly mathematics
and the sciences) who are in the teacher certification program in the
Graduate School of Education by the time they begin tenure as Steffensen
Cannon scholars, and descendants* of Ellen Christina Steffensen Cannon
in any program of study at the University of Utah.
*For the requirement
of this scholarship, "descendant" means direct descent from
Ellen Christina Steffensen Cannon, e.g., her child, grandchild, great
grandchild. Establishing some other relationship with the Steffensen
or Cannon family does not satisfy eligibility of those wishing to claim
descendancy.
- Descendants shall receive
first preference for scholarship where competing candidates are otherwise
comparable or where descendants show reasonable financial need, and
(a) for incoming freshmen who have maintained a high school standing
in the top quarter of their class, or (b) for undergraduates with a
grade point average (GPA) of 2.75 or better, or (c) for graduate students
with a 3.00 GPA or better on a 4.0 scale.
- Scholarships will be $8,500
per academic year for undergraduate students (no undergraduate tuition
waivers available); and $12,000 for graduate students per academic year,
plus tuition.
- Each undergraduate or
graduate scholarship shall be awarded for one year with the possibility
of renewal for a second year for a two-year maximum term as long as
the student remains in good standing as determined by her/his academic
department and remains in the program for which the scholarship was
awarded. Should the student not remain in the program and/or in good
standing, the balance of the scholarship moneys shall be returned to
the Steffensen Cannon Fund.
Students
who have held undergraduate Steffensen Cannon Scholarship are eligible
to apply for the scholarship as graduate students but will receive no
special preference. If an undergraduate scholar graduate after one year
of scholarship support and wishes to apply for the scholarship as a
graduate student, then s/he mush make a new and complete application
as described elsewhere in these guidelines.
- Steffensen Cannon scholars
are required to be matriculated, full-time students at the University
of Utah. A Scholar may not accept remuneration form another scholarship
while holding tenure as a Steffensen Cannon scholar. Also, it is intended
that this scholarship will provided the recipient with the opportunity
for full-time study without the burden of employment. If a scholar wishes
to accept any employment, then s/he is require to report tot eh Steffensen
Cannon Committee for its consideration and approval of the nature of
the proposed work, the number of hours involved, why this work is necessary,
and how it enables the completion of academic work in an excellent and
timely manner.
Application Procedure
All applicants are
required to submit in one large envelope:
- a completed application
form (you must have the free Adobe
Acrobat Reader to read the application online);
- a vita or resume;
- a statement in no more
than 1,000 words of general activities, intellectual interests, proposed
course of study, academic achievements, and leadership experiences;
- three letters of reference
(preferably from faculty who can comment on academic ability) in envelopes
which have been signed by the writer across the sealed flap;
- Incoming freshmen
applying for the undergraduate scholarship should include official transcripts
of high school work. Undergraduate students should include official
transcripts of all college and university work, and students applying
for the graduate scholarship should include official transcripts of
all college and university work. Graduate Students should provide
an additional statement of no more than five pages regarding their scholarly
research interests and a description of their master's theses or doctoral
dissertation research project. On the outside of the large envelope,
it should be indicated whether the student is applying for a graduate
or undergraduate scholarship and the name of the college in which the
student is studying (i.e., Education or Humanities). If the application
is an undergraduate in some other field (i.e., Physics) and is also
in the teacher certification program, then the college indicated on
the large envelope should Education.
Completed application
packets consisting of the items described above shall be submitted in
one envelope addressed to:

Deadline
Deadline for application
is February 15. Announcement of awards will be made no later than
April 15. Incomplete applications may not be considered.
